Gay Renaissance Starts Now: Gay Marriage Legal!
Today is a big day for gay men everywhere. The Supreme Court’s ruling today legalized gay marriage all over the country. This historic day will mark the ending of the gay shame era and the beginning of the Gay Renaissance.
Why is to be expected?
Legalizing gay marriage will mark the end of homophobia on a big scale. I believe that this ruling will make it unpopular to discriminate against gay men in public settings. And the people who continue to fight against gay men will eventually be forced to quiet down or step down from their positions. (And many are already doing that voluntarily).
Gay men will have a bigger incentive to seek partners based on traits that lead to marriage, instead of hookups. This is important. Marriage carries with it powerful symbolic meaning that most cultures value. Given that most gay men would like to get married at least once in their lifetime to see “how it feels” – their actions will need to be changed so that that marriage can be created. This is why I anticipate major changes in the way gay men relate to one another.
The whole concept of being gay will change. Gay men will be able to relax, not having to always carry the burden of a fight, always tensed up, always fighting for equality. For the first time gay men can focus on themselves. Their energy can be spent on something new, a new direction -> spirituality or personal growth.
